How cybercrime actually works, according to a former internet fraudster

Brett Johnson is a reformed internet fraudster who stole more than $1 million through stolen credit cards, counterfeit documents, and phishing schemes.

Johnson cofounded ShadowCrew, one of the first major cybercrime forums, where stolen credit card numbers and hacking techniques were traded among criminals. He was placed on the US Secret Service's most-wanted list in 2004. After his arrest in 2005, he served eight and a half years total in prison.

Johnson talks to Business Insider about the mechanics of cybercrime and credit card theft. He also discusses identity fraud, dark web transactions and payment methods, and shares cybersecurity advice.

Since his release, Johnson renounced crime and became a cybersecurity consultant and speaker, educating businesses and law enforcement about the dangers of online fraud.
