  • A Cloudflare outage disrupted major websites, including X, causing widespread internet issues.
  • Cloudflare said it saw a "spike in unusual traffic" to one of its services shortly before the outage.
  • The company's network issues follow a recent major outage at AWS.

It's not just you — parts of the internet are down again.

A network issue at web security business Cloudflare has disrupted internet traffic and taken down sites such as X for many users.

A Cloudflare spokesperson told Business Insider that the company saw "unusual traffic" to one of its services at 6:20 a.m. ET.

"We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic," the spokesperson said. "We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors. After that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike in traffic."

Cloudflare said via its status page that it was experiencing an "internal service degradation" at 6:48 a.m. ET. About 30 minutes later, it said that some services were recovering, but "customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts."

At 7:37 a.m. ET, the company said it's "continuing to investigate this issue."

Downdetector, a site that tracks website outages, was also briefly down early Tuesday morning. It showed that users were also reporting outages at OpenAI and Grindr. Business Insider was unable to replicate any disruption on ChatGPT.

Cloudflare Twitter outage
X, formerly Twitter, experienced sporadic downtime on Tuesday morning.

Business Insider found that some sites, including X, were sporadically back online as of around 8 a.m. ET, although some were loading slowly.

Cloudflare provides technology to help protect websites against hackers and fake traffic, and to make web pages faster. It is used by millions of websites globally, which means when it goes down, it affects a big portion of the internet.

The outage came around the same time as scheduled maintenance was taking place at data centers in several locations, including Atlanta and Los Angeles, according to Cloudflare's status page.

X and OpenAI could not immediately be reached for comment.

The disruption follows a major outage at Amazon Web Services last month, which impacted many online services, including Snapchat, Venmo, and Reddit.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
